Authors note: “This essay is about the theme and wrong things thought the book Set a course for freedom”
You ever wondered to play it safe or take some risks? So far I have read to page 71, in the book “Set a Course for Freedom” by William K. Lewis. In this book there are four main characters, Thomas, Mattie, Mr. Hampton and, collie. Thomas Mr. Hampton and, Mattie are all Americans. Collie is a British naval officer on the British warship the Derby. The theme of this book is about the brutal treatment from navel s ships .The event that will be seen through the eyes of these characters is that capture of Thomas, and the decision to escape from the British navy. Each character will take their turn in their opinion to say what Thomas should do.
The interruption in the story is through Thomas’s eyes which made the events seem bad or evil because, of the description of the British navy men. Thomas thinks they are dirty rotten people who make them do stuff they don’t want to do. He also thinks that it was totally outrages of them kidnapping him and he will try and escape at any risks. This is because if he doesn’t he will fail his sister because he can’t find her husband on a naval ship. Also he will have to move to Britain and he has no family there as, being American.
Although Thomas was being American Collie is full British. Collie thinks it was great that he was captured, because that means less work. He does not think that Thomas should run away because he knows the consequences If he tries. Mattie is completely clueless about what is happening in the mental war. She thinks that it is good to be doing work. She views it as a good thing. Mr. Hampton is the one who has sent the people out to gather more workers and he thinks it is great that they got him and thinks that Thomas should cool off. Over all this book is very one sided because the men really did not do that much to him but the author makes a big fuss about it he makes the navel personal seem like devils. That is why in the book he will try to escape because he makes it seem so bad on the ship. If it were through the eyes of anybody else he would make a few friends and stay.
